We recently had the pleasure of producing a profile of Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, one of four recipients of this year’s Black History Month Local Hero Awards. The Northern California Local Hero awards are sponsored by Union Bank and KQED. Her profile will air on KQED San Francisco during the month of February, 2013 in conjunction with the station’s Black History Month programming.

Dr. Burke Harris, MD, MPH, FAAP is the founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness (CYW), a comprehensive health and wellness center that integrates medical, mental health, holistic and social services for an evidence-based approach to improving the health and well-being of urban children and youth. Her areas of interest are in health disparities, child trauma, nutrition and asthma.

Particularly, her focus is serving communities where issues of poverty and race present challenges to conventional healthcare and education. The CYW follows Dr. Burke Harris’ work as the founding physician and former Medical Director of California Pacific Medical Center’s (CPMC) Bayview Child Health Center.
